All About Light Bulbs
There is big debate at this time about the advantages and disadvantages of using compact flourescent light bulbs in place of the old incandecent type with the main arguement centering around the mercury in the compact flourescent bulbs.
The mercury is not supposed to be an issue in a sealed bulb. However, should you break one the mercury is exposed and you have a real problem. Most people have no idea how to clean such a bulb properly and often use their bare hands or their vacuum instead of disposable gloves, duct tape, plastic bag and cardboard.
Here is an invaluable article on how to clean it up safely. I suggest cutting and pasting this article into your word processor and keeping it for reference. You could also print it out and keep it where your family keeps light bulbs for easy reference should the need arise.
Halogen lights also use less energy than old fashioned incandescent bulbs but they get very hot and can pose a fire hazard. If you use a halogen for crafting, you get great light, but it heats up the work area. That's not always desirable. The fact is, LEDs are a better and more efficient choice for lighting versus compact flourescents or anything else, however they are very expensive and until the price comes down, people won't be adopting them in any great numbers. Until then, the compacts are the best alternative to reducing greenhouse gases, although they must be handled safely and disposed of properly. Find out about disposal options in your area. Some places like hardware stores will accept those bulbs for recycling.
